A Collection of Circus Sketches
A Collection of Circus Sketches
In 1949 and again in 1951, Herbert Ryman traveled with the Ringling Bros. Circus, filling sketchbooks depicting performances as well as the everyday life of the acrobats, clowns and roustabouts on the road. This bound book compiles into one volume an array of his best pencil and ink drawings sketched during those last years of the Big Top as the circus delighted the public in small towns and cities across the country. These sketches along with excerpts from Ryman’s journals show you the artist’s hand and keen eye for detail. As his friend, clown Emmett Kelly said, “Herb put the smell of sawdust into paint.”
Whether you enjoy the bygone era of the circus, or revel in Ryman’s evocative drawings, this is a book to enjoy again and again.
